Learning Objectives: Get Started

Whether we call them Objectives, Outcomes, Competencies, or Goals, we need to specify for our students what they can expect to learn from us. They describe not what the student will be doing, but where we want the student to go. Learning Objectives need to be defined clearly and made readily available. This kind of transparency, whether applied at the program level, the course level, the unit level, or even the activity level, significantly increases the likelihood that your students will succeed.

  • Explain the difference between goals, objectives, outcomes, and competencies.
  • Verify that learning objectives match the level of the class.
