Assessment and Measurement: Get Started

Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand the course material. Assessment can also help motivate students. If students know they are doing poorly, they may begin to work harder.

Just as assessment helps students, assessment helps educators. Frequent assessment allows you to see if your teaching has been effective. Assessment also allows you to ensure your students learn what they need to know in order to meet the course's learning objectives.

Module Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  • Design assessments that will measure the achievement of your learning objectives.
  • Develop criteria for evaluating assessments that are clear.
  • Design assessments that are sequenced, varied, and suited to the level of the course.
  • Identify effective ways to construct your Brightspace course such that learners will have multiple opportunities to track their learning progress with timely feedback.
