Learners come to their courses with varying levels of experience, skills, and understanding. Student self-assessment involves students in evaluating their own work and learning progress. Formative self-assessment enables students to thoughtfully reflect on the quality of their work-in-progress and their learning, and determine next steps. Through self-assessment, students can:

  • Identify their own skill gaps, where their knowledge is weak
  • See where to focus their attention in learning
  • Set realistic goals
  • Revise their work
  • Track their own progress
  • If online, decide when to move to the next level of the course

This process helps students stay involved and motivated and encourages self-reflection and responsibility for their learning.

This workshop, the tenth in our #LEX Advanced series, builds on the skills you learned in the #LearnEverywhereXULA course, and will explain why self-assessments are effective and will show you how you can use the Self-Assessment tool in Brightspace to provide feedback that motivates students to self-reflect in a formative format.
